The Pre-Medicine program provides guidance on courses, experiential activities, and competencies for students that are preparing to be competitive applicants to Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.), Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.), and Doctor of Naturapathic Medicine (N.D.) programs after completing their Bachelor's degree at James Madison University. The Pre-Med program is a minor that students complete as part of their baccalaureate degree.

The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences (Pre-Med) program at Liberty University is designed to prepare students for medical school, pharmacy school, dental school, physician assistant school, and related medical fields.

Students interested in pursuing a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree should major in Biology or Chemistry (with a Biology minor). For the best preparation, we recommend a double major in both Biology and Chemistry. Students should review the admissions requirements for the professional schools of their choice.

Trevecca's Pre-PA Pathway allows students to tailor their undergraduate academic experience to prepare a competitive PA school application and maximize success in Trevecca’s PA program. This Pathway consists of the courses required for a major in biology with a minor in chemistry, along with defined upper-level electives focused on building a solid foundation for PA school.

Students who are interested in going to medical school typically major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry. These majors include most of the required courses for entrance into medical programs and will help prepare students for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). However, other degrees can also prepare students for health professions; thus students are encouraged to major in the field where they excel and should consult the pre-health professions advisor about course work.

Tufts’ Post-baccalaureate Premedical Program is designed for students who already have an undergraduate degree and need to complete prerequisite coursework in order to apply to health professions graduate schools. It is designed for “career changers” and for students who need to complete all or most of their prerequisites for graduate school.

As a pre-medical student you will typically follow the Lindenwood curriculum for one of the following: a bachelor of science degree in biological science, a bachelor of science degree in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry, or a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with Emphasis in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Any of these degrees will get you the prerequisite coursework that you need to be a good candidate for application to a medical school.

Drury University has excellent programs for students interested in allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (D.O.) medicine. Both types of medical schools require applicants to take the MCAT. The time required to graduate from medical school is the same. Both types of medical students are eligible for the same internships and residencies. Unlike a traditional allopathic doctor, osteopathic doctors are trained in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and have a holistic approach to training.

When looking to pursue a career in medicine, there is no particular major that medical schools prefer. It is recommended that students pick a major that challenges and interests them so they can stand out in the classroom. While medical schools want students who have developed a strong foundation in the sciences, they also want students to seek out courses that will help develop skills in independent thinking and decision making. Physicians must be able to communicate effectively and have the skills to express their thoughts and ideas.

The Pre-Medical curriculum is recommended for students who wish to pursue such careers as traditional human medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, optometry, or nontraditional medical arts that require intensive undergraduate preparation in biology and chemistry.
