Charles University Second Faculty of Medicine
PhD in Medical Biophysics
- Prague, Czech Republic
PhD
Full time
4 years
Blended, On-Campus

The study program Medical Biophysics is an interdisciplinary branch of science that employs virtually all biological fields and is focused on scientific study and independent research activities in interdisciplinary settings, from natural science up to clinical medical work. This branch of science originated from the need to separate medical applications observing interactions of physical fields and radiation with a living organism from the bulk of technological and biological disciplines. The goal of the study of Medical Biophysics is understanding basic biological processes for development in innovative methods and/or devices for clinical application in diagnosis and therapy. Doctorands, further to their Master's education, are recruited for scientific and research projects at the training institutions and motivated by their Supervising Tutors to solve scientific and research problems of their own. In keeping with the recent developments, the program Medical Biophysics is also focused on the interconnection of the studies with the needs of clinical practice. The program is carried out without any specialization.

Charles University First Faculty of Medicine
PhD in Developmental and Cell Biology
- Prague, Czech Republic
PhD

Developmental and cell biology are dynamic fields that integrate molecular biology, biochemistry, histology, and functional morphology, in the context of both evolution and ontogenesis, in one unifying view of life on the cellular level. The study, which typically takes four years to complete, involves intense science training under the guidance of a supervisor and extends the education on M.Sc. level by specialized courses. Courses are guaranteed by specialists from the Faculty of Science and 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University as well as experts from the institutes of the Academy of Science (majority of them from IMG). Students can work on their doctoral projects in the above institutions as well as in hospitals, clinical laboratories, institutions of applied research, or, less frequently, in the biotech development segments of private companies. Students discuss the progress of their research at Ph.D. conferences in their oral presentations or posters. Project plans can be also implemented as parts of grant applications. Student mobilities help them to get acquainted with the international dimension of scientific collaboration. The outcome of their scientific work is presented at international conferences and as publications in impacted international journals. Members of the oversight committee and the head of the program supervise students' projects and work with students on an individual basis. Students are encouraged to make independent opinions based on the literature they study.

PhD Programs in Health Care Biomedical Studies
A Ph.D. can be earned in about four years of schooling, provided students are able to attend full-time. This degree can also signify that students have attained important achievements in the understanding and developments within their specific field.
What is a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science? This program works to help students further understand and uncover new research regarding biomedical science in many different arenas, and to further the knowledge of biomedical sciences around the world. Students can choose to focus their Ph.D. in many different biomedical science fields, such as biochemistry, microbiology and immunology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology and toxicology, and structural biology. Following the completion of required coursework, students will then need to write and defend their dissertations in order to receive their Ph.Ds.
While a doctorate degree can take quite a bit of time and effort to earn, the benefits can be exponential. Better career opportunities, better pay, and the chance to make a difference in the world all make earning a Ph.D. incredibly beneficial.
The cost of a Ph.D. program varies from school to school and program to program. Students are advised to contact potential schools in order to receive current information regarding the financial responsibility of earning a doctorate degree.
Students who graduate with a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science often have many employment opportunities available to them. Some individuals may choose to return to academia and teach as university professors, or they may join other scholastic organizations and oversee as well as contribute to research teams. Graduates may also work as biomedical engineers, as research scientists, and as biomedical writers for professional medical and healthcare publications.
