The MSc Human Nutrition and Dietetics program offered at the University of Limerick (UL) is a Graduate Entry Masters of Science program delivered over two years full-time. This innovative evidence-based interfaculty program is an opportunity for honours graduates to pursue studies that will lead to them becoming competent nutritionists and dietitians working across a diverse range of environments to include the clinical, community and public health settings, hospital and private practices, food service management and food industry.

The MSc in Design for Health and Wellbeing is based on working and co-designing with stakeholders right across health care, from hospitals, to mental health services, public health, and the wellbeing of consumers in society. The program is offered as a full-time and part-time option. The part-time option caters for those who are working or have other commitments and requires one day a week on campus. The program facilitates online and blended learning.

This Masters of Science in Public Health is designed to equip students with marketable and transferable skillset and competencies that will enhance their career in public health or other health-related disciplines, both locally and internationally.

The overall aim of the program is to provide registered nurses with the opportunity to enhance previously acquired professional education and develop critical inquiry, knowledge and skills, attributes and competencies in preparation for developing roles within nursing. Successful completion of year 1 (Graduate Diploma) will provide students with the academic qualifications necessary to be considered for Clinical Nurse Specialist posts. Successful completion of year 2 (MSc) will provide students with the academic qualifications to be considered for Advanced Nursing Practice posts. The program provides opportunities to explore research as evidence for enhancing and changing practice. The program also provides opportunities for nurses to develop critical thinking and reflective skills at specialist and advanced practice levels. The program will develop professional qualities and a high level of competence in the promotion of excellence and current best practice in the delivery and appraisal of advancing practice.

The MSc Advanced Practice (Midwifery) aims to develop students’ knowledge and critical thinking skills to provide advanced clinical midwifery practice. To enhance care and ‘improved clinical outcomes for women and their babies through higher levels of critical analysis, problem solving and senior clinical decision-making as a lead healthcare professional who is accountable and responsible for their own practice’ (NMBI 2018, p.10).

This new programme has more flexible entry requirements (e.g. RPL) than the existing MSc in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology and also has the option of an exit award after 60 credits completed (e.g. Higher Diploma Award). This degree runs parallel to the existing programme which aligns to the Psychological Society of Ireland accreditation requirements. The purpose of this degree is to offer a pathway for those seeking to upskill on topic areas relating to mental skills and mental health in sport and the degree is not a qualification in psychology. It offers a grounding in research and application for those who seek further training to pursue roles that don’t explicitly require a qualification in psychology (e.g. sports coaching, sports management etc.).

A key goal of this program is to prepare practitioners for the challenges of leading and delivering specialist/ advanced level respiratory care across a variety of settings. To achieve this goal, program content focuses on providing practitioners with the theoretical underpinnings, clinical exposure and competence for the development of knowledge and skills in areas of assessment and therapeutic interventions for persons with a respiratory condition.

The program is based in the Department of Psychology, which has a strong focus on research and its applications to social issues; it reflects the core orientation of the department with emphases on research methods, applied and social psychology and clinical psychology; the course represents an exit route for those interested in research careers in the voluntary or state sector, and it provides an excellent basis for entry to doctoral level degree programs in psychology.

The overall aim of the MSc Nursing (Palliative Care) programme is to provide registered nurses involved in the care of patients with a life-limiting illness the opportunity to develop their previously acquired professional education and clinical practice skills. The programme focuses on the care and support of patients with palliative needs and their families.

The MSc in Bioprocessing explores the fundamental science behind bioprocessing ranging from molecular biology to downstream processing in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

The program is dedicated to providing a thorough grounding in the knowledge and application of psychological principles to organisational settings in order to enhance employee well-being and organisational performance; it seeks to equip candidates with a sound understanding of theory and research and develop core competencies and professional skills in organisational theory, organisational change, employment relations, selection and assessment, training, employee well-being and research design and methods.

The overall aim of the Master of Perinatal Mental Health program is to support health care professionals to work more effectively with parents and their families experiencing perinatal mental health issues. A key goal of this program is to prepare practitioners for the challenges of leading and delivering quality of perinatal mental health care. To achieve this goal the program content focusses on providing practitioners with the theoretical underpinnings for the development of knowledge and skills in areas of assessment, screening and therapeutic interventions for persons with perinatal mental health issues.

The course is designed to enhance graduates' critical thinking and develop evidence based practitioners as future leaders of effective services. Graduates will obtain an in-depth knowledge of an area of Health Sciences to apply to their professional practice. From this course, graduates will be able to describe and appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the current range of theory and research. They will reflect critically on their own and others' learning styles and practice.

The overall aim of the MSc in Nursing/Midwifery is to provide registered nurses/midwives with the opportunity to develop and enhance their knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to care for patients/clients to the highest professional standards across the health care continuum. The modules offered are grounded in a body of evidence-based knowledge that promotes excellence in nursing/midwifery practice.

The MSc Occupational Therapy (Professional Qualification ) program is recognised by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists and accredited by the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland.
