Humanizing medicine and care by fostering moral practices and institutions is the mission of the low-residency Medical & Health Humanities program at Drew University. Created almost three decades ago, our certificate, master’s, and professional doctorate were a first of its kind and continue to innovate and serve local, national, and internationally based care contexts. These degrees meet the growing need for advanced training in health humanities, care ethics, health policy, contemplative care, and narrative medicine.

We understand art therapy as a set of healthcare activities that channel and facilitate the expression and resolution of emotions and emotional or psychological conflicts through action or artistic creation. The objective of the Master in Art Therapy is to train professionals who, coming from different areas of knowledge, can integrate these resources into their professional work or join multidisciplinary teams in the different areas of intervention: educational centers, health care or social care, using general and systematic art, dance, music, theater or literature from a clinical perspective. Creative therapies, such as Music Therapy, Art Therapy, Therapeutic Theater and Dance Movement Therapy make, without a doubt, a significant contribution to multidisciplinary care in all these areas of intervention.

When asked if everything technically possible is ethically correct, it is necessary to look for answers not only in science but also in ethics. Ethics (bioethics) provides basic and universal rules that try to put limits or margins on science.

Theater therapy is a discipline that develops psychotherapeutic intervention models with the support of theatrical artistic techniques. It is a tool that opens channels of expression and communication, develops social skills, increases cognitive abilities, promotes creativity and the management of healthy emotions, prevents and facilitates the treatment of disorders, stimulates learning and helps to resolve dangerous situations, risk and conflict. As a theater therapist you will help people to resolve conflict and risk situations and personal problems by introducing important changes in their own lives.

The Master in Music Therapy, designed for both psychology and education professionals, prepares you to intervene in improving communication skills and in the physical, cognitive and socio-emotional rehabilitation of various groups, promoting the health of users through different musical techniques. This training enables you to intervene in the expressiveness of people through music.

The Master of Bioethics degree is a new collaborative program of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. An innovative, interdisciplinary, and cross-divisional graduate program, the goal of the MBE program is to prepare students from diverse individual and professional backgrounds for the bioethics challenges of professional and civic life. The rigorous pursuit of human wellbeing through health care and research has resulted in tremendous gains, locally and globally, for the benefit of individuals and populations. From the first ventilator to the first vaccine, such scientific and technological discoveries have been used to prolong life and alleviate human suffering while advancing health-related knowledge. These advancements, however, often present challenging ethical questions — for individuals and society — about appropriate use, access, safety, and rights and obligations, among many others.

The Combined Postbac Premed-M.S. Bioethics Program, offered in partnership with the Columbia University School of Professional Studies, allows highly-qualified students to enrich and diversify their premedical education prior to enrolling in medical school.
