The Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling online program prepares students for careers in counseling-related fields by offering advanced preparation in counseling, testing, and research methods. The program also includes the completion of a practicum consisting of a University-approved counseling setting under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or licensed professional counselor-supervisor (LPC-S).

As members of the clinical mental health counseling program of James Madison University, we have formed our own special community of faculty, staff, and students. On successful completion of the program, student should be able to: identify the fundamental psychological processes that underlie psychological phenomena in cognition, developmental psychology, social psychology, personality psychology, and biological psychology; understand the fundamental principles of research methods; critically evaluate current issues in psychological research and its applications in society; demonstrate how psychological issues can be investigated and critically evaluated; select and develop strategies to investigate and solve psychological issues on the level of individuals and groups; apply the fundamental psychological concepts and practices to psychological issues in research and in the social context; demonstrate expertise in applying psychological methods when assessing and solving psychological issues; demonstrate interpersonal competencies and professional sensitivity including ethical behaviour; conceptualise, research and write critical assessments of psychological areas of investigation; understand and evaluate the significance of psychological research and the findings that it can provide; critically evaluate psychological applications to solutions in society considering contextual limitations and the feasibility of psychological interventions.

The Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is a graduate-level residential program designed to meet the Virginia requirements for licensure as a Professional Counselor. The faculty provides quality professional training of clinical mental health counselors from a faith-based perspective.

This course combines intensive movement-based studio practice, collaborative facilitations, seminars, and a shared research unit with other MA students which creates a learning environment that encourages personal exploration, collaboration and critical reflection. The Sesame approach is underpinned by Jungian psychology and draws together Laban movement, play theory, Billy Lindkvist’s work with movement with touch and sound, and a mythopoetic approach to the psyche. There is also the opportunity for immersive practice in the key subject areas of Laban movement, myth, movement with touch and sound, and drama. This is allied with studies in developmental and analytical psychology, specifically the work of Jung. The group process is central to the student experience and supported by a weekly session across the first three terms that explores interpersonal dynamics between members and draws from group analytic theory.

The SOAS MA in Medical Anthropology and Mental Health facilitates understanding of health from diverse perspectives and investigates the complexity of human suffering, as well as varied forms of healing and treatment. The programme offers training in anthropological approaches to the major health and mental health challenges of our time.

This Program provides integrated professional and advanced academic training equipping the student to function as a Clinical Psychologist and leads the student to be able to apply for an internship in Clinical Psychology and, thereafter, undergo a Professional Board Exam in Clinical Psychology. After successful completion of a Professional Board Exam, the student can then apply to the Professional Board for Psychology of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) for registration as a Clinical Psychologist. Such registration will be subject to any professional conditions and requirements stipulated by the Professional Board for Psychology and the HPCSA at the time of registration.

The MA Option: Biokinetics is a full-time postgraduate program run by the University of Pretoria. As the most diverse Faculty at the University, Humanities offers an exciting range of programs and discipline-based majors. The Humanities programs offer part-time and full-time options and allow students to specialize in a chosen field.

The thesis option normally requires at least one year of full-time study and entails completion of a thesis. The thesis is a major piece of supervised research of up to 40,000 words on a topic of current interest.
