In Spain we have two large Fairs of the Natural Therapies sector, such as Expo EcoSalud and BioCultura; as well as Infarma in Madrid and Barcelona. Year after year the number of attendees as exhibitors is increasing due to the increased interest of young people and families for a healthier diet and a healthier health care with fewer drugs. Proof of this is the growing number of companies in the food, naturist and pharmaceutical sectors that are offering the market products that coexist with this new philosophy of healthy and healthy life and at the same time the Spanish television networks are broadcasting programs that promote a life healthy.
In Spain we see as more and more pharmacies, doctors and other health professionals and parasanitarios are promoting the use of medicinal plants as a complement or in some cases substitutes for conventional medicines by empirical studies that show in many cases the reduction of the effects collateral health that can cause other complementary problems. It is already very common to find in the pharmacies and shopping centers plants such as valerian, milk thistle, mint, turmeric, dandelion, etc. that through capsules, infusions or as spices can be used for daily use. It is increasingly common to find university programs offered by Spanish universities such as the University of Barcelona, among others.
The medicinal plants constitute a market of enormous actuality, since their consumption is high and the produced sales are so high that they require a labor market of specialists who direct their efforts towards a greater knowledge of the medicinal plants and of course, to inform of the benefits and risks that can derive from their consumption. According to data from the year 2002 in Spain, the Pharmacy represents approximately 40% of the sales of phytotherapy products. These sales grow by 8 to 10% year-on-year, while those corresponding to herbalists / large stores decrease or remain stable, according to IMS growth data in Europe.
In the rest of Europe, where the market for medicinal plants is much more developed, sales growth is estimated at around 3% year-on-year. Germany is the country with the highest number of sales of phytotherapeutic products (33% of total OTC sales) and the lowest percentage (14%) corresponds to Belgium.
