Introduction
The master’s programme in Molecular Biotechnology has been developed in close cooperation with businesses working within bioscience and the biotechnology sector. This makes it unique and means that you will learn systems biology methods that are in demand both within the employment market and in research. Molecular biotechnology combines fields such as molecular biology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry and immunology, in order to develop products and services within the pharmaceutical, agricultural and food industries.
The University of Skövde offers a two-year master’s programme in Molecular Biotechnology in which you will use laboratory and computer-based techniques to study and modify genes and proteins. The techniques you will learn can be applied within medicine and the agricultural and food industries, for example, to identify diseases and to genetically modify plants, animals and cells. Within the programme, you will study the structure, function and regulation of genes and proteins. The programme includes advanced research-oriented studies within molecular biology, biotechnology and systems biology. Independent laboratory work and computer-based analysis of experimental biological data are important elements of the included studies. You should therefore enjoy working both in the lab and at a computer.
Admissions
Curriculum
The study programme is provided by the University of Skövde and is named Molecular Biotechnology - Master's Programme (Molekylär bioteknik - master program). It comprises 120 credits and is a second-cycle programme. The main field of study is Systems Biology.
Constituent courses in the study programme
During the first semester of the programme, you will learn about experimental work and will use advanced laboratory equipment to analyse DNA, RNA and proteins. Techniques used include qPCR, mutagenesis, cloning and protein expression. You will also study biostatistics, bioinformatics and molecular biotechnology. The second semester focuses on analysing experimental biological data, using both various biology systems and bioinformatics methods and more advanced biostatistics. The first part of the third semester includes a 15-credit course in next-generation sequencing (NGS), which is currently one of the hottest fields in bioscience and where there is a great demand for knowledge.
The programme concludes with a degree project (45 credits), where you will use your theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills to solve a research problem within the field of systems biology. This is an individual degree project and can be carried out at a business or an educational institution, either in Sweden or abroad.
The focus of the programme is on computer-based analysis of experimental biological data.
Molecular Biotechnology is an international programme, and the courses are conducted in English.
The following courses are included in the programme:
- Bioinformatics Analysis with R A1N, 7.5 credits
- Data Analysis for Life Science A1N, 5 credits
- Experimental Methods and Design in Life Science A1N, 17.5 credits
- Molecular Biotechnology A1N, 7.5 credits
