The doctoral (Ph.D.) study program Medical biophysics is an interdisciplinary branch making use the cooperation within the framework of basic science research in biology and medical clinical practice. Student education is focused on the relation between physics and medicine. Attention is paid to the knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic methods, studies of physical processes on biological membranes, mathematical modeling of biological processes, biomechanics, biosignals, and also to the biophysical effects of electromagnetic radiation. The standard length of study is four (4) years. -

Biochemistry and pathobiochemistry deals mainly with biochemical and molecular biological problems of biomacromolecules, i.e. proteins and enzymes, lipids and nucleic acids, as well as their structural and other important low-molecular substances in nutrient systems. The aim of the study also clarifies their mutual substance metabolism and their role in the regulation of life processes such as hormones, neurotransmitters, growth factors, receptors, antibodies, signal molecules etc.

A very important field is also research into biological membranes, membrane transporters, subcellular components, energy transformations, extracellular matrix and the role of the second messengers in cell regulation. The research focused on the role of free radicals in terms of their action as mutagens, on the research of other toxic agents for nucleic acids and biomembranes and on the research of carcinogenesis and atherogenesis. The methodological field requires knowledge of fundamental techniques and separation and functional characterization of biomacromolecules as well as low-molecular biochemical components of cells and body fluids, or molecular biology techniques, or cell and tissue culture cultivation. -

A graduate of the Developmental biology study program meets the requirements for a qualified researcher. They possess theoretical and practical knowledge, plus experience in a wide range of biological disciplines (molecular and cellular biology, embryology and developmental biology, reproductive biology). He/she is trained to carry out fundamental and applied research into cell structures, organismal reproduction, and development, morphogenesis, the molecular basis of cellular regulation, proliferation and differentiation, and intercellular relations in multicellular systems throughout the entire life cycle of an organism. Graduates will be useful in basic scientific research, biotechnology, and applied research and practice (health, agriculture, biotechnology), as well as in the training of new generations of researchers. -

Doctoral study program in Biochemistry and Pathobiochemistry deals with the chemical and biological characterization of biomolecules and their building units in health and diseases. The program deals with their mutual transformation, with their role in the regulation of physiological processes and with their disorders. An important task is to study the biological membranes, subcellular components (organelles), energy transformations and the role of extracellular matrix and second messengers in the cell regulations. Branch also focuses on the role of free radicals in carcinogenesis and atherogenesis. The study program is closely related to molecular biology and genetics as well as to many basic and clinical biomedical fields, especially to the clinical biochemistry. -
