This cross-disciplinary program is designed for students with a strong interest in engineering and bio-medicine. Drawing from our established expertise in engineering technologies and from the research synergies with the School of Biosciences, this degree produces engineers with a solid knowledge in biology and medical science.

NOVA's Biomedical Engineering develops innovative technologies in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. The course covers a very wide range of areas such as Biomedical Instrumentation, Signal and Image Processing, Biomaterials, Biomechanics and Rehabilitation. The course was created in order to stimulate creativity, initiative and autonomy of students, encouraging them to apply the scientific and technological knowledge acquired, both to improve health care and to understand the working mechanisms of the human body. At various stages of the course, the connection to various health institutions and companies linked to this sector is promoted.

As one of the first dozen accredited Biomedical Engineering programs in the U.S., our program has many unique features that attract excellent students from all over the world such as Accreditation: Accredited since 1991 by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET, Catholic University has a longstanding tradition and success in training undergraduate and graduate biomedical engineers for various careers for industry, research, medical school, and other professional opportunities.

Established in March 2011, The School of Biomedical Engineering consists of 3 basic disciplines; medical imaging, medical laboratory science, and bioscience. The School of Biomedical Engineering runs 5 departments; the Department of Medical Imaging No.1-3, the Department of Medical Laboratory Science, and the Department of Bioscience.

It is a university degree that is part of structured higher education studies according to the Bologna Declaration. It is only possible to be studied full-time with the standard length of study 3 years. Upon graduation, i.e. after a successful defense of a bachelor thesis and passing a final state examination, the graduate obtains a Bachelor's degree (abbreviated as B.Sc.).

Application of engineering techniques in biomedical sciences is gradually expanding. Today, with the ever-increasing complexity of medical technology, there is a growing demand for technical professionals that could inter-relate the fields of biomedical and engineering.

Engineers find a solution to a particular problem or to meet a requirement of a tangible product (machinery, equipment, system, or process). An engineering design, builds, operates, examines the product and the behavior under different operating conditions in order to improve and develop it.
